Charles Shin

Executive Managing Director

Charles is a Co-founder and Executive Managing Director of Novus Merchant Partners. He has over 20 years of global investment banking and principal investing experience and has acted as the lead advisor on over $5 billion of financings and $4 billion of M&A.

Prior to forming Novus Merchant Partners, Charles spent 8 years with Canaccord Genuity as a Managing Director primarily focused on building Canaccord’s Diversified Industries practice, and later took on the responsibility for building the firm’s Asia investment banking practice. Charles has a wealth of experience in financing and advising companies in a broad range of industries including agriculture, cannabis, consumer products, industrials, forest products, aviation, real estate, and emerging technologies.

Charles holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Actuarial Science from the University of Toronto.

Ron Rimer

Executive Managing Director

Ron is a Co-founder and Executive Managing Director of Novus Merchant Partners and has over 30 years of industry and investment banking experience. Ron has acted as lead advisor on over $5 billion of financings and M&A transactions over his investment banking career.

Prior to forming Novus Merchant Partners, Ron was Vice Chair at Macquarie Capital Markets Canada where he was primarily responsible for Macquarie’s Real Estate and Diversified Industries groups while holding other senior positions including head of the company’s Equity Capital Markets and Private Capital Markets groups. Prior to joining Macquarie, Ron held other senior capital market roles over 11 years including Global Head of Diversified Industries at Canaccord Capital Markets Canada and also as a top-ranked real estate equity research analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Ron also has over 10 years of real estate industry experience in senior finance positions at Brookfield Property Management and The Lehndorff Group. Ron formerly acted as a Trustee of Artis REIT (AX.UN: TSX), a $5.5 billion diversified REIT and served on its investment and audit committees. He is also a past board member of the Children’s Aid Foundation and was active in lecturing accounting and real estate capital markets courses at local universities and industry associations.

Ron is a CPA, CA, and has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Public Accounting from McGill University.

Steve Dawson

Managing Director

Steve is a Managing Director of Novus Merchant Partners and a seasoned capital markets and real estate industry executive. Steve’s current board memberships include, American Communities Inc. (NYSE: ACC), the largest US student housing REIT at $9 billion in enterprise value; Medical Properties Trust (NYSE: MPW), a $6 billion hospital/healthcare REIT in the US and Europe; and, Institutional Financial Markets, Inc. (AMEX: IFMI), a broker-dealer specializing in mortgage loans, SBA loans and other credit-based securities.

Steve’s previous board positions have included, US Restaurant Properties, Inc. (NYSE: USV), a restaurant property REIT; Trustreet Properties, Inc. (NYSE: TSY), the largest restaurant REIT in the U.S.; Sunset Financial Resources, Inc. (NYSE: SFO), a mortgage REIT; AmREIT (AMEX: AMY), a retail property REIT; and, Desert Capital REIT, Inc., an unlisted public mortgage REIT. From 1990 to 2003, Steve served as Chief Financial Officer of Camden Property Trust (NYSE:CPT), a large multi-family REIT based in Houston which grew from $240 million to over $3.5 billion during Steve’s leadership tenure. Steve also served as President, CEO and Trustee for American Manufactured Communities REIT from 2012 to 2013.

Steve holds a B.B.A., in Accounting from Texas A&M University and currently serves on the Real Estate Council of the Mays Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M University.

Justin Barragan

Director

Justin is a founding member of the Novus Merchant Partners team. He has over 5 years of investment and merchant banking experience with over $500 million financing and M&A transaction experience, exclusively with public and private growth-stage companies in the diversified, real estate, and technology sectors. Justin’s experience includes investment banking at a based-in-Toronto boutique, family-office investing and merchant banking as well as creating the first pure-play student housing REIT in Canada.

Justin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the Ted Rogers School of Business at Ryerson University.

Rob Reynolds

Project Manager

Rob has over 10 years of experience in corporate finance and international business operations in the manufacturing, agricultural and hospitality sectors. He has performed increasingly senior roles at a diversified holding company based in Toronto with global assets and operations in more than 20 countries, most recently acting as a Director of Finance and Operations. Rob's experience includes having assisted in the successful execution of private and capital markets M&A transactions.

Rob holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honors from McMaster University with a specialization in Accounting and minor in Economics.

Joshua Urquhart

Associate

Joshua joined the Novus team as an Analyst after working in Equity Research as an Associate at Canaccord Genuity.  Prior to Canaccord, he interned at Scotiabank as a Sales & Trading Analyst and Quantitative and Technical Analyst at a Toronto based Hedge Fund.

Joshua holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he also played on the Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Team.
